Sixteen school children and a bus driver were injured in a chain-reaction collision involving three Alameda-Contra Costa Transit buses and two cars that crashed in Oakland’s hilly Montclair District. None of the injuries was serious, although one student suffered a broken leg, authorities said. Mike Mills, spokesman for the transit district, said a bus driven by Betty J. Jones apparently lost its brakes while coming down a hill, forcing Jones to veer the bus sharply into an earthen embankment. The bus then smashed into another bus, which started the chain-reaction crash, authorities said.
