Speed Limits

Share

The increasing possibility that the speed limit on rural highways will be increased to 65 m.p.h. is very good news. I think that the 55-m.p.h. speed limit on interstate highways is ridiculous and has not made that much difference as far as safety goes, but it is the law of the land so I obey it.

However, I do not believe that this speed increase is the complete answer. We will still have the speed freaks out there who believe that laws are for others and not them. The ones who now do 65 in a 55-zone will do 75 in the 65-zone. The only time these people, men and women, believe in 55 m.p.h. is when they are in a 35- or 45-zone.

What we need is more consistent and more strict law enforcement. Hit these lawbreakers in their pocketbooks often enough and they’ll slow down. The problem is with the police. I drive the outlying Ventura Freeway every day. Cars go by me at 65 and 70 and the police drive right along with them. Are they too lazy to do the job they’re getting paid for?
