COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Sweeps on Pair of One-Hit Shutouts

Debbie Dickman and Lisa Martin threw one-hitters Saturday to lead Cal State Northridge to a 7-0, 6-0 softball sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader at Northridge.

Dickman (4-2), a freshman, had a perfect game for five innings of the first game, but Tracy Goodhew of Dominguez Hills led off the sixth with a single.

CSUN (9-4, 2-0 in the CCAA) was led in the first game by Beth Onestinghel, who was 2 for 2 and scored twice, and Kelly Winn, who had two runs batted in.

Martin (2-0), who struck out five and faced only one batter more than the minimum, allowed her only hit in the second inning of the second game.

BASEBALL

Moorpark 8, Rio Hondo 1--Moorpark pounded out 12 hits and received solid performances from four pitchers at Rio Hondo.

It was the final tuneup before the Raiders (4-5) open Western State Conference play Saturday at home against defending state champion College of the Canyons.

Freshman Jon DeGennaro struck out two and did not walk a batter in four innings as he improved his record to 2-1. DeGennaro, David Raper, Anthony Mohr and Mike Chase combined to limit Rio Hondo to eight hits.

Moorpark broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fifth inning. Sean Thompson went 2 for 3, Rick Allen went 3 for 5 and Dan Russell had two RBIs to lead Moorpark.

“We were just happy to get singles here and there right now. We have not been swinging the bats real well. Its nice to get a little momentum going before conference play starts,” Moorpark Coach Ron Stillwell said.

The Master’s 5-6, Azusa Pacific 4-8--Frank Mutz pitched a four-hitter and freshman first baseman Jeff Preston smashed two home runs, including a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth, to give Master’s the win in the first game of an NAIA District III doubleheader at Master’s.

In the second game, Master’s (8-3, 5-1 in district play) led, 5-3, going into the ninth but committed four errors to allow five unearned runs. Azusa Pacific is 7-7, 4-2.

Westmont 8-2, Cal Lutheran 2-1--Westmont swept a doubleheader at Cal Lutheran (2-5) in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 1, Saddleback 0--Karen Mead struck out seven and allowed only two hits to lead Moorpark (5-2) in the second round of the Cypress College tournament.

Peggy Liebel of Moorpark (5-2) scored the game’s only run on a passed ball in the sixth inning. Liebel walked with two outs and advanced to third when Saddleback’s Annette Heredia committed a two-base throwing error on Malia Ouzts’ infield grounder.

Pierce 1, Cuesta 0; Citrus 3, Pierce 1--Pauline Madrid threw a no-hitter in the first-round game of the Taft tournament but took the loss in the second game. The victory by Citrus eliminated Pierce (4-5) from the tournament.

Madrid (4-5) had eight strikeouts in the no-hitter and allowed five hits against Citrus. Teammate Kim Casino had a double in each of the games.
