Pacific 10 Roundup : Washington Wins on Welp’s Shot

Washington center Chris Welp banked in a running hook shot with four seconds left to break a tie and lead the Huskies to a 63-61 Pacific 10 Conference victory over Oregon State Sunday at Seattle.

Welp, a 7-foot senior, led all scorers with 25 points.

Washington, 16-13 overall and 10-8 in the conference, will play Stanford in the quarterfinals of the Pacific 10 tournament at UCLA on Friday at 7 p.m.

Oregon State, 18-9 overall, dropped to 10-8 in the conference in losing its fifth consecutive conference game. The Beavers will face California in the quarterfinals Friday at 1 p.m.

Welp dropped in the Huskies’ final four points, including the game winner. He tipped in a missed lay-in by guard Eldridge Recasner with about 40 seconds remaining to give Washington a 61-59 lead.

Beaver center Jose Ortiz, a 6-foot-10 senior, sank a four-foot lay-in with 22 seconds left to tie the game and was fouled by Husky Phil Zevenbergen. Ortiz, who finished with 15 points, missed the free throw and Welp pulled down the rebound.

The Beavers held a 32-27 halftime lead. But Zevenbergen, who scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, scored nine of Washington’s first 11 second-half points to lead the Huskies to a 38-38 tie with 15:15 remaining. Washington led, 49-40, with 10:40 left.

Arizona 70, California 51--Forward Sean Elliott scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to lead Arizona in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Berkeley.

Arizona, 18-10 overall and 13-5 in the Pac-10, will be the second seeded team in the conference tournament at UCLA. The Wildcats, on Friday at 9 p.m., will play the winner of a first-round game Thursday night between USC and Oregon.

California (17-13, 10-8) will face Oregon State in the quarterfinals Friday at 1 p.m.

Arizona scored 14 straight points late in the first half to take a 28-16 lead.
