A San Diego teen-ager was killed and another was in critical condition Monday after the stolen car in which they were riding crossed a double center line at high speed and slammed into an oncoming school bus taking students home from Morse High School.

The San Diego County coroner’s office said a passenger in the car, Michael H. Imperio, 16, died at the scene, in Paradise Hills. The driver, Alan Aure, 16, of San Diego, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Mercy Hospital, where he was in critical condition with massive head injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The 21 students on the bus were not injured.

The California Highway Patrol said witnesses told officers that two cars, including the one that crashed, apparently were racing eastbound at 3:05 p.m. on Alsacia Street approaching Alsacia Court. Witnesses said one car passed the other as they approached a curve, then it crossed the double line.

The school bus skidded to a halt as the car went out of control and plowed head-on into the bus. The driver of the bus was taken to Grossmont Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Several witnesses said the Mazda RX-7 that crashed was traveling about 75 m.p.h. and the other vehicle was going about 45 m.p.h. The speed limit is 40 m.p.h.

The driver of the second car told reporters that they were not racing when the accident occurred. The CHP is investigating.
