Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham has banned a Phoenix Gazette columnist from his office, insisting he has the right to decide who covers his news conferences. The Republican governor, who took office Jan. 5, told reporters that columnist John Kolbe “is a nonperson . . . I don’t want to even recognize his existence.” Gazette Managing Editor Lynne Holt said Kolbe will continue to attend news conferences. Mecham informed the Gazette publisher of the ban last week, after the paper printed a Kolbe column critical of the governor.
