Health officials say 67 AIDS deaths were reported in San Francisco last month. The February numbers were “a continuation of the (upward) trend. The numbers are continuing to increase as predicted,” said Dr. George Lemp, an epidemiologist in the Department of Public Health’s AIDS office. Officials also said they have documented 110 new cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The number of AIDS cases in San Francisco totals 2,963, and 1,773 of those have died. Meanwhile, a former convent in the largely gay Castro District of San Francisco opened as the city’s first hospice--a facility that cares for the dying--dedicated primarily to caring for AIDS victims.
