NHL Roundup : Kurri Scores Twice in 5-3 Oiler Victory

Jari Kurri scored his 45th and 46th goals of the season on perfect feeds from Wayne Gretzky to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night at Edmonton.

Mark Messier also scored two goals, and Jaroslav Pouzar had the other for the Oilers.

Mike McPhee, Brian Skrudland and Ryan Walter scored for the Canadiens.

Montreal, trailing, 4-3, had a chance to tie on a power play in the final minutes, but Messier scored his second into an empty net after the Canadiens pulled goalie Brian Hayward for an extra attacker.

Pittsburgh 7, Minnesota 3--Mario Lemieux and Troy Loney scored in the opening 1:33, and the Penguins went on to rout the North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

Pittsburgh is 3-0 against Minnesota this season.

Lemieux added his 45th goal of the year and Dave Hannan also scored twice for Pittsburgh. Randy Cunneyworth and Dan Quinn each added a goal and two assists.

Minnesota’s Dino Ciccarelli scored his 49th and 50th goals.

Quebec 5, Buffalo 5--Christian Ruuttu’s goal 37 seconds into the third period gave the Sabres a standoff with the Nordiques at Quebec.

The tie allowed Quebec to hold onto the fourth and final playoff spot in the Adams Division, two points ahead of the Sabres.

Michel Goulet had a goal and three assists for Quebec, and Ruuttu added two assists for Buffalo.

Toronto 7, N.Y. Islanders 2--Russ Courtnall and Steve Thomas each scored two goals and Ken Wregget stopped 31 shots as the Maple Leafs downed the Islanders at Toronto.

Courtnall scored both his goals in the second period to help Toronto increase a 1-0 lead to 6-2.

Ken Morrow and Rick Kromm scored for the Islanders.

Hartford 5, Philadelphia 3--Sylvain Turgeon scored two goals and Mike Liut stopped 28 shots as the Whalers turned back the Flyers at Hartford, Conn., to extend their unbeaten streak to six games.

It was the fourth two-goal game for Turgeon since he returned to the lineup Jan. 9 from an abdominal injury that kept him out of action the first half of the season. He has 16 goals in 28 games.

Flyer Tim Kerr scored his 47th goal, his 23rd on the power play.

Chicago 4, New Jersey 3--Defenseman Doug Wilson scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:56 left, and the Blackhawks beat the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J., to extend their unbeaten streak to eight games.

New Jersey was trailing, 3-1, in the second period, but Peter McNab scored a power-play goal at 14:14 and Rich Chernomaz tied the game with 8:42 left.

Boston 3, Washington 2--Steve Kasper knocked in the rebound of Ray Bourque’s shot from the point for a power-play goal to give the Bruins an overtime victory over the Capitals at Boston.

Washington trailed, 2-0, after two periods, but tied the score on goals by Lou Franceschetti and Gatean Duchesne.

St. Louis 5, Detroit 3--Bernie Federko scored the go-ahead goal and assisted on Greg Paslawski’s game-winner as the Blues downed the Red Wings at Detroit.

Steve Yzerman had a goal and an assist for Detroit.
