A mayor in the region estimated that a major earthquake that burst a natural dam on a rain-swollen river in the Andean mountains of eastern Ecuador has killed at least 100 people and left 15,000 homeless. Carlos Onate, mayor of the town of Tena, said that the massive flooding washed away many homes and their inhabitants. “The dead could be in the hundreds. In any case they will easily pass 100,” Onate said. The quake, originally reported as measuring 6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 7.3 by the U.S. Geological Survey.
