No Repeat of 1985 School Race

I am a candidate for District 4, Los Angeles Board of Education, and am writing in response to the Feb. 24 article “7 Candidates Vie for Seat in L.A. School Board Race” written by Pamela Moreland.
Although any publicity at this time is greatly appreciated, a disservice to the voters of the West Valley has been committed by stating that there is “a sense of deja vu to the race for the West Valley San Fernando Valley seat . . . “ Although certainly there are candidates with ties to the 1985 election, there are also legitimate candidates like myself who are running to ensure that there is no repeat of the 1985 election.
The race for representing the West Valley district is more critical today than it has been in perhaps the last 10 years. During that time parents have lost confidence and trust in the public system. A considerable amount of parents have told me that they would love nothing more than to save the $2,000-$3,000 spent each year for private schools but that the lack of quality education and the overcrowded classrooms keep them away.
The 1987 election is a race for the future of public education and the credibility of that system. This race is critical to our children. This is not a race of “deja vu.” The concerns of 1985 are different from those of today. I urge you to treat your coverage as such.
