Services Scheduled for Episcopal Rector

Funeral services are scheduled today for the Rev. Evan Rowland Williams, rector of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Encino since 1965. Rowland died March 7 after a long illness. He was 59.

Born in Portland, Ore., Williams devoted most of his life to the teachings of the church. After receiving an undergraduate degree at Stanford University, he earned a master’s in divinity from the University of California at Berkeley. He also received a doctorate in moral theology and church history from Oxford University.

His numerous involvements in the church and academic world included serving as Episcopal chaplain at the University of Oregon and the University of California at Santa Barbara. He also taught philosophy of religion at Scripps College and comparative ethics at UCLA.

He was also active in parishes in Eugene, Ore.; Portland, Santa Barbara and Ontario, Calif., before being elected rector of St. Nicholas.

Services will be held at St. Nicholas Church, 17114 Ventura Blvd.
