Countywide : Freeway Authority Plan Opposed by Cities Group
Fearing weaker gains in property tax revenues, members of the Orange County division of the League of California Cities voted last week to oppose creation of a special district that would fund freeway improvements.
The Orange County Transportation Commission has proposed such a district, known as a freeway authority.
The proposed agency would raise about $25 million by diverting from cities some of the new tax revenue generated from increases in assessed valuations.
This would shift about 50% of the growth in property taxes away from some cities, according to the Orange County City Managers’ Assn.
Council members from each of the county’s 26 incorporated municipalities belong to the League of Cities.
The vote against the freeway authority came during the organization’s monthly meeting Thursday night at the Anaheim Stadium Club.
