Tornado Damages Turkey Farm in N. California
A tornado touched down near the town of Corning Saturday, causing about $75,000 worth of damage to a turkey farm, officials said. No injuries were reported.
The tornado touched down about 3 p.m. in Tehama County, about 10 miles west of Corning, said Charles Oneal, spokesman for the State Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento.
The sheriff’s office and the California Department of Forestry responded to the call and found five or six barns at the Mitchell Turkey farm down, a roof and pump shed damaged and fences down. Sgt. Jeff Ogden said the tornado cut a swath 200 feet wide and a quarter-mile long.
Jan Null of the National Weather Service in Redwood City said California gets a few tornadoes a year which cause little damage. “They aren’t terribly rare,” Null said. “They don’t have the intensity of the ones in the Midwest.”
The sheriff’s office received more calls at 3:31 p.m. about three funnel clouds being sighted in the Vina, Corning and Los Molinos area. Ogden said these funnels did not touch down.
