A 17-year-old boy was critically injured in El Toro when he was struck by a van that turned directly in front of his motor scooter, authorities said. California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Smith said the youth, identified as Patrick Kang of El Toro, was in critical condition at Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo with “massive head injuries.” Smith said Patrick was riding south on Jeronimo Road, just south of Woodbluff Road, at 35 to 45 m.p.h. about 8 a.m. Wednesday. The driver of the van was heading north on that road, apparently did not see Kang and turned left directly in front of him, Smith said. The youth, who was not wearing a helmet, ran head-on into the van. He was thrown off the scooter and landed on his head. The driver of the van was not injured. Smith said that no one has been cited in the incident but that the case is under investigation.
