An 18-foot gray whale that swam into San Diego Bay on Tuesday is still around, but officials from the National Marine Fisheries Service aren’t concerned.

“Gray whales wander in and out of bays with great frequency and don’t get into trouble,” said Rod McInnis, chief of management at the fisheries offices in Long Beach.

“As long as the whale is free swimming and not injured or obstructed, we expect it to return to sea.”

Officials from the fisheries office have been monitoring the situation to make sure the whale is not harmed but otherwise are not taking action.

“We prefer to leave the whale alone and let it swim out to sea on its own,” McInnis said.

There would be cause for concern if the whale is still in the bay two weeks from now, but McInnis doubted that would happen.

“It’s not in jeopardy; it will probably swim out soon,” McInnis said.
