Boy George Pleads Guilty in Marijuana Case, Is Released

LONDON — British singer Boy George, who has one conviction for heroin possession, pleaded guilty Friday to possessing marijuana.
Judge Maria Black said the singer, whose real name is George O’Dowd, had made “amazing efforts” to come off drugs, and she let him go on a two-year “conditional discharge.”
That means that if he gets into trouble again with the law in that period, the marijuana charge can be brought back against him along with any new charges.
George’s lawyer, Raymond Sturgess, said the Dec. 20 marijuana offense occurred when the singer had been trying to break his heroin addiction.
George, wearing black pants and a purple sweater, sat quietly during the hearing and fidgeted. “I’m very glad,” he said when it was over.
