HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : BASEBALL : Sharts’ 6th Home Run in Four Games Leads Simi Valley to 5-4 Win

Scott Sharts hit a two-run home run in the first inning and pitched a complete game to lead Simi Valley High to a 5-4 victory over Newbury Park on Friday in the Marmonte League opener for both teams at Simi Valley.

The home run was Sharts’ sixth of the season. All have come in the past four games. Sharts needs two more home runs to tie the Simi Valley season record and just one to tie the school’s career mark of 12, held by Tim Rapp, who currently plays for Cal State Northridge.

Sharts, who is hitting .482 with 16 runs batted in, was 2 for 2. Sharts also struck out seven and walked two while yielding 12 hits to improve his record to 2-1 for Simi Valley (7-1). . . .

Crespi’s Matt Arnold stole home with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Celts a 4-3 win over St. John Bosco in the Del Rey League opener for both schools. Chad Nichols (3-0) pitched the final 3 innings for Crespi and struck out six. Nichols took the mound in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and one out and struck out the first two batters he faced to end St. John Bosco’s rally. Joe Testa hit his third home run for Crespi.

Sean McKenna was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Craig Terry and Mike Maggoria each was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Doug Johns hit a solo home run as Agoura (3-1, 1-0) collected 13 hits in a 6-2 win in a Frontier League game at Agoura. . . . Senior right-hander Scott Bush (3-0) struck out three and scattered six hits, and Ryan McMullen scored two runs as Rio Mesa (6-2) beat Buena, 4-2, in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa.

Right-hander Marty Garcia pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight for La Salle in a 2-1 win over St. Genevieve in a Santa Fe League game played at La Salle. . . . Every starter drove in at least one run for Harvard in a 14-9 win over Bell-Jeff in a Santa Fe League game at Harvard. John Collins was 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored, and Tim Rath was 2 for 3 with one RBI and two runs scored for Harvard (3-3, 1-0). Mike Thomson was 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored for Bell-Jeff (1-7, 0-1).

Roger Salkeld struck out eight and scattered two hits to lead Saugus to a 6-0 win over Palmdale in the Golden League opener for both schools. Salkeld (2-1), a sophomore, has allowed only two earned runs in 14 innings. Saugus (3-2, 1-0) scored its first run when Tom Dodson led off the second inning with his second home run of the season. . . . Jason Stanley’s fifth-inning bases-loaded triple broke a 4-4 tie and propelled Canyon (2-3) to a 12-5 Golden League victory over Burroughs (Ridgecrest) in a game called after six innings because of darkness. Ken Sollom struck out 14 and surrendered one earned run to even his recored at 1-1. Sollom also scored two runs. Travis Regnolds was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple and 2 RBIs for Canyon.

Kevin Johnson, who was 3 for 4, led off the ninth inning with a home run to lead Burroughs to a 3-2 win over San Gabriel in the Foothill League opener for both schools. Larry Hatley (2-1), who pitched an eight-inning complete game Monday, went the distance again, scattering two hits and striking out four. Todd Pam was 3 for 4 for Burroughs (1-0, 5-3).

Tony Saccaro was 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs and pitched 4 shutout innings for Grace Community in a 11-8 nonleague win over California Christian. Saccaro (1-0) relieved starter James Soliz in the third inning with Grace Community (1-1) trailing, 8-5. He struck out six and gave up four hits. Saccaro tripled in the first inning to drive in two runs and had a two-run triple in the fourth inning. . . . Highland Hall allowed four unearned runs and lost to Verbum Dei, 8-3, in a nonleague game that was called after five innings because of darkness. Verbum Dei (3-3) catcher Lash Bailey had three RBIs and ended Highland Hall’s consecutive stolen base streak at 33 when he nailed Aaron Rudelson in the first inning. Chris Sorenson was 2 for 3 for Highland Hall (2-2).

Montclair Prep pitcher Scott Hauser picked up his third win of the season and 11th without a loss in his two-year varsity career in a 7-4 win over Gardena in the fourth round of the Westside tournament. Hauser, a senior, had three strikeouts in three innings and was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs. P.C. Shaw was 3 for 3 for Montclair Prep (7-1, 1-0). . . . Providence had only five hits, but three were for extra bases in an 8-7 win over Salesian in the seventh-place game of the 32-team Serra tournament.
