Orange County College Roundup : No. 12 Houston Baptist Upsets Titans in Gymnastics

Houston Baptist University, the nation’s 12th-ranked men’s gymnastics team, beat second-ranked Cal State Fullerton to win the Titan Invitational meet Friday night in Titan Gym.

Houston Baptist finished with 284.05 points. Fullerton had 283.05. Brigham Young University was third (269.65), followed by UC Santa Barbara (263.70).

Alfonso Rodriguez of Houston Baptist won the all-around competition with 58.45 points, including a perfect score of 10 on the high bar. Miguel Rubio of Houston was second (57.75) and Fullerton’s Eli Rodriquez was third (56.9).

Fullerton’s Li Xiao Ping had a 9.95 score on the pommel horse.

In men’s tennis:

UCI Invitational--UC Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, freshman Trevor Kronemann, defeated Bruce Steel, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, as UCI, ranked 19th in the nation, defeated Dartmouth, 8-1.

Utah defeated Chapman, 5-1.

Texas Tech 5, Cal State Fullerton 1--The Titans won only one match as Texas Tech clinched the match at Cal State Fullerton after the singles competition. No. 6 Kevin Joe defeated Sander Patel, 6-1, 6-1, for the only Fullerton victory. The Titans fell to 8-9.

In college softball:

Dominguez Hills 3-0, Chapman 1-6--Freshman Shelly Mahon pitched a three-hit shutout to give Chapman a split in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills at Hart Park.

In the second game the Panthers scored once in the first and added five runs in the third on five hits and three Toro errors. Regina Marchionni and Michelle Lyons each had two hits for the Panthers (2-6, 6-15).

In the first game, all the runs were scored in the seventh, with the Toros picking up three runs on four hits and the Panthers coming back with one. The Toros’ Patti Bosnak was 2 for 3, including a single, to start the rally in the seventh. Sally Meyer had two hits for Chapman.
