A man and a woman are dead and the slain woman’s estranged husband is in jail after a shooting Saturday in Guatay, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives arrested Dennis Leroy Nelson, 38, after the 9:25 a.m. shooting that left Nelson’s wife, Robben, and Johnnie Cox dead of multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators said deputies from the Pine Valley substation were called to Cox’s trailer in Paradise Trailer Park by witnesses to the shooting. Apparently Robben Nelson, 31, and her husband were separated, investigators said, and she was seeing Cox, 29.

A sheriff’s spokesman said witnesses told investigators that Nelson arrived at the trailer and walked to a rear bedroom, where he allegedly shot his wife and Cox several times with a handgun. Investigators said that Cox and Robben Nelson died at the scene of wounds to the upper body and head.

Nelson fled the scene but was arrested about 30 minutes later in Pine Valley, investigators said. He was booked at County Jail on suspicion of murder.
