More Money for Police Voted
Over the objections of Mayor Tom Bradley, the Los Angeles City Council today unanimously approved a plan to authorize $4.3 million to place the equivalent of 190 extra police officers on the streets during the next three months.
The council acted after Police Chief Daryl F. Gates described significant increases in arrests and drug seizures in February when the equivalent of 257 police officers were added by assigning extra overtime. Mayor Tom Bradley had warned the council that the proposed budget taking effect July 1 would require severe cuts in city services.
