Gardena : Council Assails Pipeline

The City Council has unanimously approved a resolution opposing construction of the Angeles Pipeline through Gardena until potential problems are resolved.

The 30-inch steel pipeline would transport 330,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Kern County and off Santa Barbara through the Los Angeles Basin to refineries in El Segundo, Carson and Long Beach.

Mayor Don Dear emphasized that the resolution does not favor or oppose construction of the pipeline, but says that construction could pose a potential danger because the route is close to an earthquake fault line. Possible traffic disruptions also were cited.

Opponents of the pipeline, including members of the Coalition Against the Pipeline--an organization of more than 130 community groups throughout the basin--expressed support for the resolution. Burbank has passed a law forbidding construction of the pipeline there.

The Gardena council will consider further action on the pipeline after public hearings before Caltrans and the U. S. Forest Service are held and a final environmental impact report is released.
