“THE ACADEMY AWARDS” (illustrated on the cover) and “NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP,” Monday--Call it an Evening of Champions. Call it a shoot-out between Hollywood and the Sports Establishment. Call it a ratings showdown between prime time’s also rans: ABC and CBS.

Call it a headache for viewers. The events are on opposite each other. Live.

You could try taping one, but what do you want to bet that each network, or its local station, will try to spoil your fun by reporting the outcome of the other?

CBS gets the jump with its coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball championship, beginning at 5 p.m. (Channels 2 and 8). Generally one of TV’s most exciting sports events, the game will be broadcast from the Superdome in New Orleans by Brent Musburger and Billy Packer.

(The women’s championship game will be played Sunday at University of Texas in Austin, with CBS carrying the action beginning at 10 a.m. Tim Brant and Mimi Griffin will be courtside.)

ABC’s telecast of the 59th annual Academy Awards begins at 6 p.m. (Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42), but KABC-TV Channel 7, as is its custom, will be on the air at 5 to cover the arrival of celebrities at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles.

The ceremonies honoring the top films of 1986 will be hosted by Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan (shown on the cover with Oscar).

The program will include performances of the five nominated songs--”Somewhere Out There,” “Glory of Love,” “Take My Breath Away,” “Life in a Looking Glass” and “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space”--plus special awards to actor Ralph Bellamy and producer-director Steven Spielberg.

Culminating the Oscar festivities will be the announcement of best picture of the year. In the running are “Children of a Lesser God,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “The Mission,” “Platoon” and “A Room With a View.”

Movieland, like college basketball, will have crowned a new champion.
