Players Union Says Clippers Have No Right to Force Marques Johnson to Attend Games

Larry Fleisher, general counsel for the NBA Players Assn., said Friday that the Clippers have no legal right to take disciplinary action against injured forward Marques Johnson if he doesn’t attend the team’s home games.

“The Clippers are the most confused organization that exists anywhere,” Fleisher said. “The whole thing is ludicrous and ridiculous.”

The Clippers sent Johnson a letter Wednesday saying he would be fined and suspended unless he started attending games. Johnson sat on the bench during the Clippers’ 125-115 loss to Sacramento Thursday night.

“We have told the Clippers that they have no right to do that,” Fleisher said.

Clipper officials were not available for comment.

Fleisher said no date has been set for Johnson’s arbitration hearing to settle a contract dispute with the Clippers.
