Congressman Asks Changes in School Sites

I have respectfully requested that the Los Angeles City Board of Education consider alternative sites for the new elementary schools in the cities of Cudahy and Bell. The present proposals would destroy four mobile home parks and displace hundreds of senior citizens.

The residents of the mobile home parks, which would be destroyed in order to build the schools, have voiced strong opposition to the proposal and their concerns must be addressed. Many of the mobile homes in the parks are owned by elderly residents whose relocation would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Considering the availability of other suitable sites, the uprooting of these dedicated citizens is poor public policy.

Any site for the new school will produce some sort of public objection. The key to proper public administration is to minimize this type of reaction. The proposed sites of the new elementary schools in Cudahy and Bell do not meet this goal.

Therefore, again, I strongly urge the Los Angeles City School Board to consider alternative sites for the new elementary schools.
