Doug Shaffer ended two years of frustration Thursday night by winning the one-meter U.S. Diving Indoor springboard title held since 1983 by teammate Greg Louganis.

Shaffer, from Franklin, Ind., finished with 589.92 points to 579.57 for Louganis, a double 1984 Olympic gold medalist from Malibu, Calif. Shaffer was second to Louganis in the one-meter indoor event in both 1985 and ’86.

Shaffer, 23, and Louganis, 27, both represent the Mission Bay Makos of Boca Raton, Fla.

Ron Meyer, who competes for LSU Aquatics of Baton Rouge, finished third.

Louganis was in the lead until his ninth of the event’s 11 dives--a reverse 1 1/2. When his head came too near the board, he got a few gasps from the crowd and 5s from the judges.

At the end of the round, Louganis trailed Shaffer by 8 points and could not recover.
