Santa Ana : Man, 60, Injured When His Mattress Ignites

A 60-year-old man was listed in fair condition Sunday at UCI Medical Center with burns suffered after he apparently fell asleep while smoking in bed, authorities said.

Silvino Delariva of Santa Ana appeared to have second-degree burns over 15% of his body, according to firefighters at the scene. A spokeswoman for the burn ward at the Orange medical center said she could not comment on the severity or extent of the burns or release any information beyond the man’s condition.

City firefighters received the call at 11:42 p.m. Saturday and, upon arrival at Delariva’s home in the 2500 block of West Stanford Street, found that the mattress fire already had been extinguished, Battalion Chief Jim Dalton said Sunday.

However, firefighters removed the burned material and made sure there were no smoldering particles. Without that precaution, burned mattresses “almost always rekindle,” Dalton said.

Only the mattress and box spring burned, but there was some smoke damage in the house, he said. Damage was estimated at $800, he said.
