A Northern California woman who was paid $28,000 in an out-of-court settlement because a container of Crystal Light Lemonade mix was contaminated with the chemical ephedrine HCl was accused of having tampered with the package herself. Lois Marie Tredway, 52, who lives in the Lake County community of Kelseyville, was charged in a federal complaint with contaminating one tub of lemonade mix with the chemical in October. It is commonly used in cold remedies. San Francisco FBI agent Raymond Mislock said no trace of the contamination was found in any other batch of the lemonade mix and there was no danger to the public. FBI agent David Williams filed an affidavit in the case saying Tredway confessed, during an interview with him and other FBI agents April 2, to tampering with the lemonade package.
