Dozens of people were hurt when riots broke out in the Basque town of Guernica early Monday after a music festival to mark the 50th anniversary of the town’s bombing during the Spanish Civil War, organizers said.

The Basque autonomous government said one person was seriously injured and seven, including four policemen, were taken to the hospital. Organizers and medical sources said 50 more were treated for slight injuries.

The Basque government’s Interior Ministry said the riots started when several Basque policemen who stopped a bar brawl were pelted with glasses and bottles.

The festival, which coincided with a rally by supporters of the Basque radical Herri Batasuna (People’s Union) party, was part of a series of ceremonies to mark next Sunday’s anniversary of the 1937 bombing of Guernica by the German Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War.
