Greg LeMond, the only American to win the Tour de France, was given little chance of recovering from shotgun wounds in time to defend his cycling championship in July.
LeMond, 25, was shot in the back in a hunting accident Monday near Sacramento and underwent surgery for removal of shotgun pellets. He was listed in fair condition.

His father, Bob LeMond, expressed doubt that the cyclist could become fit enough by July to compete.
