Share

The ocean off the Newport jetty will be a mass of white billowing dacron at noon today as nearly 600 sailboats jockey for the start of the 40th Newport-to-Ensenada race.

The huge fleet is divided into five divisions, the largest being the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF), which will in turn be divided into nine classes.

Classes will be starting at 10-minute intervals until 1:20 p.m.

The weather forecast is for light, southerly winds during the afternoon, indicating a slow race unless conditions improve south of the Coronado Islands.

The elapsed time record for the 125-mile race is 10 hours 31 minutes by the 65-foot catamaran Double Bullet in 1983.
