Accident at Port Kills Workman
A longshoreman was killed and another slightly injured late Thursday at the Port of Los Angeles, according to state officials. The men, who were working for Oakland-based Eagle Marine Services Ltd., had just finished unloading a yacht from another vessel when the accident occurred.
They were stowing a cargo beam, a piece of equipment used in conjunction with a crane for lifting unusually shaped items, when it either struck or fell on them, according to Los Angeles police officers.
Both men were taken to San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. John Magby, 34, of Long Beach, died of multiple injuries, and Frank Salcido, age and address unknown, was examined and released. The investigation is continuing, according to state safety officials.
