SUMMERTIME BLUES

Universal’s “Jaws--The Revenge” may not be taking its big bite out of the July 4 box office as originally planned. And Paramount won’t be delivering producer-director John Hughes’ “She’s Having a Baby” on time either.

First, the “Baby” news:

Paramount’s confirmed that it’s pulling Hughes’ first “adult” film (which stars Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern) from its planned June 19 release. It will be rescheduled for early next year, according to the director’s publicist and film exhibitor sources, who got the news last week. No word from the studio or Hughes as to why the delay, but a spokesman passed along a Hughes statement implying that Paramount is happy with his edit: “Whenever ‘Baby’ is released, it will be the same film I gave them last month.”

Meanwhile, “Jaws”--beset with production difficulties related to weather and temperamental mechanical sharks--may not surface as scheduled on 1,200 screens July 1. According to sources, Universal branch managers advised exhibitors this week that the movie won’t be available for the holiday weekend, but could be ready by the end of July. A Universal rep denied a change was yet in place, but conceded: “There’s a very good chance it will be delayed.”

A spokesman for co-star Michael Caine had his doubts that Universal could even make a late July date: “Michael’s been on call the past three weeks. He’s still got to film at least another week in the Bahamas and in the tank at Universal.

“It seems silly now that he missed accepting his Oscar to try to get the picture out on time.”
