Pete Weber surpassed the career earnings of his father, the legendary Dick Weber, by defeating Jim Murtishaw, 222-190, to win the $250,000 Firestone Tournament of Champions at Akron, Ohio.
The $50,000 winner’s check moved Pete Weber to the top of this year’s Professional Bowlers Assn. money list and gave him $733,331 for his seven-year career. Dick Weber has earned $731,003 since becoming a charter member of the PBA in 1958.
Weber became the first player in the tournament’s 23-year history to win from the fifth-seeded spot.
