Poet From San Pedro

When I first read Bukowski, I agreed with his publisher, John Martin, that his work was “powerful . . . challenging . . . a cold glass of water in your face.” I wanted more, but after more, I still wanted more. Sure, Bukowski has a “direct, gutsy style,” but his vision is too limited. As I read Ciotti’s article, I kept thinking, “This guy reminds me of someone.” Then it came to me: Oscar. An X-rated Oscar the Grouch. It’s not what life is all about.
