The first prize of the Joanna Hodges Piano Competition and Conference in Palm Springs went unawarded Saturday night after the judges found nobody qualified to play with the Royal Academy of London Orchestra. “It is not uncommon among all the major competitions in the world to have a jury declare a non-winner,” Hodges said. But a pianist would be chosen soon for the performance award--a concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall--regardless, Hodges added. Honorable mention went to Miyong Lee, 24, of Bloomington, Ind., and Seoul, Korea, and Jean Schneider, 21, of Los Angeles, but Hodges said the judges didn’t select a winner because “they just felt the two on stage (in the finals) were not ready to play in London.”
