Iran said its forces captured new territory in a fifth day of heavy fighting near Sulaimaniya in the mountains of northern Iraq. The official Iranian news agency IRNA said Iran has destroyed 14 Iraqi battalions defending the area in its Karbala 10 offensive, about 160 miles northeast of Baghdad. Iraq said in a communique that its 1st Army Corps repelled an assault by two Iranian regiments and that 1,500 Iranians were killed or wounded while 66 vehicles were destroyed.
