Orange County College Baseball : UC Irvine Wins First, but Settles for Split With USD

UC Irvine came from behind to win the first game of a nonconference doubleheader with the University of San Diego, 8-6, Tuesday, but the Anteaters lost the second game, 12-2, at Anteater Field.

Trailing, 5-0, after three innings in the opener, UCI (21-26-1) scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth. Don Nicholson was 2 for 2 with a two-run double in the fifth inning to lead the Anteaters.

UCI first baseman John Seeburger led off the fourth inning with a double to pull within one of the school single-season record of 21 doubles, set by Terry Stupy in 1974.

In the second game, Robbie Rogers was 3 for 4 with six RBIs, including a grand slam in the first inning, to lead the Toreros (29-19).

Cal State Fullerton 4, USC 1--Freshman right-hander Mark Beck pitched a three-hitter to lead the Titans (36-14) at USC. Fullerton, which had 11 hits, scored in the fourth and sixth innings and added two runs in the eighth.

Chapman 18-2, Cal State Los Angeles 3-4--The Panthers had 21 hits and took advantage of seven errors to win the the first game, but Cal State Los Angeles came back to win the nightcap at Hart Park.

Mike Cruz was 4 for 6 in the opener; Bryan Beals, Jeff Morrison and Jim Areias added three hits each. Cruz hit his seventh home run, and Darren Nelson hit his 19th and added an RBI single, giving him 68 RBIs on the year.

Jon Hulshof, making his first start and third appearance of the season after coming back from shoulder surgery, went four innings for his first victory. Mike Brennan struck out four and allowed only one single in 2 innings of relief.

In the second game, Mike Lau hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning off loser Jim Bennett (3-8) to erase a 2-0 Panther lead. Chapman is 11-13, 23-26. Cal State L.A. is 9-14, 23-27.
