Catalina : School for Two Harbors

Share

A one-room schoolhouse is expected to open next fall in Two Harbors on the western side of Santa Catalina Island. The Long Beach Board of Education last week approved a 20-year, $1-per-year lease agreement for the land from Doug Bombard Enterprises.

The school, which will be used by 14 students in kindergarten through fourth grade, will be donated by Long Beach yachtsman Cliff Tucker, whose company manufactures modular office and school buildings. The red schoolhouse, with a tower and big brass bell, is expected to cost about $100,000.

Currently, about 30 children living at Two Harbors must take an exhausting 1 1/2-hour bus ride to school in Avalon on the other end of the island. Children in fifth grade and above will continue to attend school in Avalon.
