Lakewood : Phone Co. Asks to Delay Plan

Share

General Telephone Co. wants to extend a one-year moratorium on changing charges for local callers so it can study proposed changes in Lakewood-area calling boundaries, a GTE spokesman said this week.

In a letter sent Monday, GTE asked the Public Utilities Commission for a six-month extension on the moratorium that is to expire June 1, said Dale Rycraft, district manager of community relations for GTE.

GTE’s request was prompted by Lakewood City Council members angry over GTE’s latest proposal to divide portions of Lakewood and Long Beach into separate calling boundaries, called zone usage measurement (ZUM) boundaries. The changes would mean some east Lakewood residents would pay a toll charge to call their city hall, the sheriff’s station and businesses in central Lakewood.
