Former Argentine army Maj. Ernesto Barreiro, a fugitive since leading a mutiny two weeks ago, surrendered to federal authorities in the western city of Cordoba, officials said. Barreiro sparked the uprising when he refused to appear in federal court to testify in connection with charges that he tortured leftist suspects during the so-called “dirty war” against subversion during the 1970s. Barreiro, 40, took refuge April 15 inside the army camp in Cordoba, where he was joined in rebellion by 130 officers. While the others peacefully surrendered two days later, he escaped by car and took refuge in Asuncion, Paraguay.
