A new intermediate school will be built at Standard Avenue and St. Gertrude Place, the Santa Ana Unified School District’s board of trustees has decided.

The new school in southeast Santa Ana will accommodate about 1,200 students in sixth through eighth grades and will cost about $20 million, according to Diane Thomas, public information officer for the district.

Assistant Supt. Anthony Dalessi said that while no firm timetable has been set, “I’m hoping we’ll have construction starting on this school by the summer of 1988.”

The Santa Ana district, which has been growing at the rate of about 1,000 students a year for the past decade, plans to build a new high school and 13 new elementary schools, in addition to the new intermediate school. The trustees selected the site for the intermediate school at their meeting Tuesday night.

The new facility will be the district’s eighth intermediate school building and will occupy 9.6 acres, said Thomas. She said the site presently has two commercial buildings, which the district proposes to buy and raze.
