Orange County Community College Baseball : OCC’s Six-Run Ninth Beats Saddleback

Orange Coast College scored six runs in the ninth inning to defeat Saddleback, 10-9, in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game Thursday at OCC.

The first-place Pirates (14-2, 29-8) trailed, 9-4, entering the bottom of the ninth but rallied on four hits, four walks and an error.

A two-run single by Ralph Ramirez tied the score. The winning run scored on a single by Dave Staton, who had doubled in his first at-bat of the inning.

Mike Misuraca, who drove in a run with a single in the ninth, was 4 for 4 with two RBIs to lead the Pirates.

Scott Stoerck (3-1), who pitched two-thirds of an inning in the ninth, was the winner.

In other Orange Empire Conference action:

Cypress 5, Rancho Santiago 3--Paul Bunch hit a leadoff home run in the eighth inning, breaking a 3-3 tie at Cypress. The Chargers (6-10, 22-17) added another run on a hit batter, a wild pitch and an error.

Rancho Santiago (12-4, 25-8), which out-hit Cypress, 12-4, loaded the bases with one out in the eighth before an inning-ending double play. Then the Dons had runners on first and second with none out in the ninth. But Erik Silvey relieved winning pitcher David Wooley (4-4) and earned his first save.

Dave Brodt had two hits and two RBIs for Cypress and Brent Reese and Scott Swearingen hit bases-empty home runs for the Dons.

In the South Coast Conference:

Golden West 17, Fullerton 6--Chip Damato was 2 for 3 and scored four runs, and Tom Smythe was 2 for 5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to lead the Rustlers at Golden West.

Brooks Peters (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings for the win. Joe Aversa was 4 for 6 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Jim Buccheri scored two runs and drove in one to help the Rustlers (11-13, 16-15). Bill Troop was 4 for 4 to lead the Hornets (17-7, 23-12-2).
