SAVE McKELLEN
When I saw Ian McKellen on Broadway in “Amadeus,” I realized I was seeing one of the great stage actors in the world today.
I felt sorry to see him so heroically trying to salvage the typically boring Ahmanson production of “Wild Honey” last fall.
My latest disappointment was to experience the brilliant actor ramming his immense talent down our throats in “Ian McKellen Acting Shakespeare” at the Westwood Playhouse. I found the show a pedantic exercise, much like a patrician British artist graciously explaining Shakespeare to the colonists.
McKellen should take a tip from Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, who created a one-person show that celebrates the magic of the theater rather than dissecting it.
Isn’t there a suitable vehicle out there for this great artist?
