Catholic Charities in the Los Angeles Archdiocese has taken the lead in helping tens of thousands of immigrants prepare for the amnesty process. Applicants may “pre-register,” by calling their nearest parish or St. Vibiana’s Cathedral, 624-3941 which will provide information on pre-registration sites. Volunteers will help prospective applicants gather the necessary documents and advise them on filling out government forms.

On Tuesday the archdiocese is opening 11 major processing centers. Those who have pre-registered will receive letters setting up interviews at these centers in the next several weeks. More centers will open later.

The fee for amnesty applications is $55 per person. Applicants will still have to pay the full INS fees when they file their completed application.

In Orange County, the diocese has not set up legalization centers yet. Those interested in assitance are asked to go to their local parish. They will eventually be directed to one of five or six centers, which have not been identified yet.
