“Charlie Rich--Greatest Hits.” Epic. Columbia isn’t going out of its way to provide extras in its “Collector’s Choice” series. Rather than add overlooked jewels such as “Just Like Old Times,” the label has simply given us the old, 29-minute vinyl version of Rich’s “Greatest Hits.” A cohort of Elvis in the ‘50s, Rich has much the same exceptional emotional range as a singer as Presley. He’s equally convincing on country, blues, rock and gospel. The emphasis here is on the mid-’70s country-pop hits, with “Behind Closed Doors” being the best known, but the soulful “Life’s Little Ups and Downs” is the most absorbing. Sound quality: average. ***

Both of these albums are part of Columbia Records’ “Collector’s Choice,” a CD budget series that is being discounted to $9.99 at some stores.
