The body of an unidentified man washed ashore early Thursday in Mission Beach, the Mission Bay Harbor Patrol said.

Harbor patrol officer Bill Tripp reported that people walking along the beach just after midnight near Ventura Place spotted the body and summoned authorities.

Deputy Coroner Robert Engel said the body had been in the water for several days. Engel said an autopsy determined that the cause of death was drowning.
