An Oceanside police officer was stabbed in the arm early Thursday while searching three men for weapons, police said. The men escaped and eluded a manhunt.

Officer Raymond Kish, 34, fired two shots at the three men as they fled in the 1900 block of Avenida del Oro, an industrial area, Detective Sheila Hancock said. She said police have no evidence that any of the men were struck by gunfire.

Kish was patrolling Avenida del Oro about 4:15 a.m. when he saw three men standing in front of a vacant business, Hancock said. Kish questioned the three and frisked them for weapons.

While Kish was patting down one of the men, the attacker turned and shoved the officer, and the two others joined in the attack, detectives said. One man pulled a knife and slashed at Kish, causing a three-inch gash on his arm.

The men fled and were not found during a four-hour search, Hancock said.

Kish was taken to Tri-City Medical Center, where he was treated for his wound and released a short time later.
