Joseph Remiro, the Symbionese Liberation Army member jailed for killing Oakland’s superintendent of schools, has been denied parole from San Quentin state prison. Remiro, 40, and his attorney did not attend the brief hearing at the prison. Remiro was convicted in 1973 of murdering Oakland Schools Supt. Marcus Foster, who was gunned down with cyanide-tipped bullets. Two months later, the SLA, a band of self-described revolutionaries, kidnaped newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, who then joined the group. Attorney Stuart Hanlon said Remiro has “more or less resigned himself to the fact that he must serve more time in prison--maybe another five years or so--before he can seriously consider parole.”
