Ireland on Saturday won the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels. The popular music contest, which attracted entries from 22 countries this year, was broadcast live on television to an estimated 500 million viewers. The winning Irish song, “Hold Me Now,” was composed and sung by Johnny Logan, who finished with 172 votes from the national juries of the 22 competing countries, ahead of West Germany’s group, Wind, with its entry “Lass die Sonne in dein Herz (Let the Sun Shine in Your Heart).” Ireland also won the contest in 1980.
