The LAPD officers who work the Hollywood beat get to see a few things their colleagues don’t: Charlton Heston nearly being shot accidentally by police, Steve McQueen giving fits to an entire police night shift by racing his sports car down Sunset Boulevard and Mulholland Drive around 3 a.m., and actor Peter Strauss calling the cops when a woman used his garden hose to shower naked on his lawn. These tales and others just go with the territory, Los Angeles officers report in the May 16 issue of TV Guide. Lt. Alan Kerstein recalls that Heston, hearing a report of a man with a gun in his neighborhood, took his own pistol and went outside. “Police saw the glint of metal and Heston’s darkened silhouette (holding) a gun and ordered him to freeze. Heston hesitated. The officers, guns drawn, suddenly realized they were about to mow down Moses” and changed their minds.
